Portrait of Devon Florence

Hailing from Cape Town, Devon has been onstage all his life, however began his journey with singing at 16 years old under the watchful eye of Brenda Feldtmann. Having studied a bachelor of music at Rhodes University and graduating with BMus Honours (cum laude), Devon then pursued an Advanced Diploma in Operatic Studies at the University Of Cape Town under the tutelage of Professor Virginia Davids. Devon has been privileged enough to study with some of South Africa's leading vocal pedagogues and researchers such as Dr Conroy Cupido (head of Opera NWU), Dr Hanli Stapela (head of Opera UP), and of course Professor Davids at the UCT College of Music. Having completed his studies at UCT Devon began lecturing in vocal studies at Rhodes and is currently pursuing his MMus in Classical Voice, once again under the private tutelage of Brenda Feldtmann. Devon's personal ethos towards singing is that anyone can learn to sing if they can understand how the voice functions. His main focus is bringing a greater understanding to his students as to how the voice functions and how to gain the most from it in a healthy fashion. Devon enjoys regular performances and recitals, and has a particular love of German Lieder, and Musical Theatre. Outside of the musical sphere Devon is an avid gardener and pet lover.
