The Sol Plaatje Institute for Media Leadership (SPI) is pleased to announce the appointment of Ryan Hancocks as its Acting Director.

Ryan joins the SPI after the retirement of Mr Francis Mdlongwa, who served as the Institutes Director for over 17 years.

Ryan steps in to provide a steady hand on the tiller of the Institute by ensuring continuity and stability while the recruitment process of Mr Mdlongwa's successor is ongoing.

Ryan is the Director of the South African Reserve Bank Centre for Economics Journalism at Rhodes University and the Deputy Head of the School of Journalism and Media Studies. He has been Director since 2016 and continues to provide a specialist level of training at the tertiary level for NQF 8 and up qualifications, while consulting with leading corporate partners in the financial and media sectors on staff training and policy development initiatives on the African continent. Previously, he worked at a senior level for Media24 and MSCI Inc. His core focus is on developing transformational journalism in the financial media space, with research that looks to incorporate community media in Africa and its ability to facilitate financial inclusion and education.
