As the newly elected 2019 Community Engagement Cllr., I have been coordinating the SRC Community Interaction Programmes by:

  • Working together with the RUCE to facilitate the partnerships between the sports & societies and residences’ CE reps and the community partners.
  • Being part of the initiation of the programs (for the year) between the CE Reps and the community partners
  • Facilitating the term one reflection meetings for the Siyakhana @ Makana (S@M) which included the different CE Reps, community partners together with the RUCE Office and my predecessor, Mr. M. Valela.
  • On 26 March, RUCE, working together with the SRC CE Cllr., hosted Tessa Muller from the University of Free State who came to Rhodes University to benchmark the Rhodes University’s model of community engagement, as Rhodes University has been one of the best institutions when it comes to engaging with the community.
  • On 27 March, RUCE, again with the SRC CE Cllr. and the Faculty of Humanities hosted Prof. Lesley Wood from the North West University (Faculty of Education), who came to make a presentation on the principles, possibilities and potential pitfalls of community-based educational research.
  • The SRC is currently working with the RUCE to collect the donations for the Cyclone Idai victims for our neighboring sister-countries that have been victims to the brutal cyclone.

The following are the programmes that were conducted by my predecessor (Mr. Mandilakhe Valela):

After the Community Engagement Extravaganza was postponed, assisted with the Amazing Race. It was in this particular event that, Mr. Robert van der Feyst from Narconon Cape Town who deals with programs that aim at preventing drug abuse, bringing about drug awareness; was given an opportunity to chat with students for about Five minutes as they were changing from Amazing Race to Environmental Extravaganza and vice versa.
