The SRC is disappointed to have to report that some members of our student body behaved in a manner that was unbecoming of leaders at the Union Labs last night.

We are aware of an incident in which some students entered the labs while intoxicated and urinated in the facility. The Campus Protection Unit has reports of the incident as well as video evidence that the SRC has seen. As a result, the labs will be closed over the current vacation period seeing as many students will not be on campus during this time. The labs will reopen during term time.

It is deeply concerning that some of us could behave in this way and take for granted the effort that was put in to ensure that the labs were open for 24 hours for academic purposes. This situation is even more unfortunate if we consider that negotiations were only completed a week ago.

Leaders must be cognisant of the fact that their actions not only have consequences for themselves but for other students as well. We must all behave responsibly and not take for granted the opportunities that have been afforded to us by fellow students.

Behaviour like this is likely to cause problems in the future and will not be tolerated. The people responsible will be dealt with accordingly during term time. We call on the student body to keep each other accountable so that we don’t have a repeat of this in the future.
