Walk the Talk
Date Released : 18/09/2017Three Rhodents from the Old Rhodian Gauteng Association decided to get together and enjoy the MTN Walk the Talk with 702 on the 23rd July. Not only is this walking event the biggest in Joburg, but with over 50 000 entries, it’s the biggest mass participation sports event on the continent. Pride Jani, Derek Sanhowe and Nozuko Twala, dressed with a ‘touch of purple’, decided to participate in the 10km walk - and had a great time throughout the day!
Old Rhodian Bursary Awards
Date Released : 03/08/2017The Old Rhodian Union handed over 28 bursaries to current Rhodes students on Tuesday, 25 July 2017. The awarding of these bursaries is based on financial need, academic record and where appropriate, whether a re-award is necessary. The OR Union funds are made possible by donations from the Chapman and Fitzsimons funds, the UK Trust, MySchool programme, the Annual Fund, ad hoc donations and various other bequests.
Date Released : 02/08/2017Johannesburg Consultations took place at The Johannian on the 7th July. A Brunch was held in the morning and in the evening, a Cocktail Party. Festival Cocktail Party
Date Released : 02/08/2017The National Arts Festival once again provided an opportunity to welcome back visiting Alumni to meet staff members and to catch up with fellow Old Rhodians who were visiting Grahamstown . On the 5th July, the Old Rhodian Union Vice-President, Prof James Gambiza, introduced Dr Peter Clayton, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor; Research & Development to all guests.
Date Released : 02/08/2017Durban Consultations took place on Friday 23rd June at the African Pride Audacia Manor Hotel. We had a Brunch and an evening Cocktail event and both were well attended with many responses and experiences shared. The consultations took a slightly varied approach in order to allow for more dialouge and the following points were discussed.
East London Consultation
Date Released : 02/08/2017Our East London Consultation took place on Friday, 9th June at the Beacon Bay Country Club. Approximately 40 Old Rhodians gathered and started a consultation ably facilitated by Adv Matthew Mpahlwa (2007). With the Survey being issued, it was noted that the process of following the questionnaire was not as beneficial to the process as most of the guests had filled the survey out already.
Port Elizabeth Transformation Consultation
Date Released : 19/05/2017Two functions were held on the 12th May, a Brunch and an evening Cocktail Consultation. Dr Clayton hosted both events and noted that converstations on institutional change and transformation characterise Rhodes University life. While these conversations are transformative in and of themselves a need was identified for more structured and facilitated transformation conversations. Central to the transformation project is the issue of the name of our University
Cape Town Alumni Transformation Consultations
Date Released : 19/05/2017This May Rhodes University kick-started the Transformation Summit Alumni Consultations as an international initiative. Alumni is the largest stakeholder group that plays a strategic role in the Rhodes community. The Alumni Transformation Task Team, consisting of the staff and students currently at Rhodes University, are interacting with the Alumni in a two-pronged approach; an online survey and consultations.
Perth, Australia Reunion Consultation
Date Released : 19/05/2017Organised by ORs Andrew Burnett (1967) and Kevin Cockcroft (1978) and kindly hosted at Andrew and Barbara’s house, the event went off exceedingly well with everyone thoroughly enjoying the evening. Prof George Wells from Rhodes University: Department of Computer Science, is currently on sabbatical and offered to be the guest speaker and to facilitate the Alumni Transformation Consultation. Prof Wells discovered that Australian boerewors ‘is actually rather good!’
Alumni House and Post Graduate Hall Celebration
Date Released : 24/04/2017Alumni House and the Post Graduate Hall held a special celebration to further congratulate the PhD and Masters 2017 graduates. The event was held at Oakdene House and was well attended by Post Graduates and guests which included the Vice-Chancellor, Dr Sizwe Mabizella.
give5 Student Fundraising Campaign 2017
Date Released : 19/05/2017Give5 is a fundraising campaign run by students to raise money for fellow students. The campaign is aimed to provoke a spirit of philanthropy in students and provides them with an opportunity to help ‘one of their own’. The success of the campaign relies on the give5 Committee and the Senior Student, together with another House Committee member, from each Residence, to galvanise the students into planning and participating in the fundraising activities.
Orientation Cocktail Party

Knocking On Heavens Door Reunion
Date Released : 09/11/2016Our Knocking on Heavens Door group (1965 to 1975) organised THE BIG PULL Reunion for the weekend of the 30th September. Over 40 Old Rhodians from all over the world made the big pull to Port Alfred for the weekend. The group met at the Royal Alfred Golf Club for a meet and greet braai on the Friday evening which served as an opportunity for informal Club meetings (Club 15 and League of Gentlemen) to be held at the same time. Johannesburg Alumni Events
Date Released : 08/11/2016The Jacaranda trees were a perfect backdrop for our Johannesburg events held from the 3rd of November. The Vice-Chancellor’s Dinner was hosted by Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Dr Peter Clayton, due to Dr Mabizela being needed in Grahamstown. Much debate and discussion was held on the Fees Must Fall and how it affects tertiary education and Rhodes University in particular.
UK Club 1904 Congratulates Caroline Rowland
Date Released : 31/10/2016n the 21st September, the UK 1904 Club held an event at The Soho Hotel in order for Ms Orla Quinlan, Director of the Rhodes University International Office to present the Distinguished Old Rhodian Awards to Caroline Rowland. Caroline is Founder and Executive Creative Director of New Moon, the company thought to have redefined the role of film in campaigning to win major sporting, cultural and business contacts.
Durban Congratulates Andy Gray
Date Released : 31/10/2016October the 15th saw KZN Alumni coming together at the Arcadia Pride Hotel in Durban. A luncheon was held midday, for our more mature Old Rhodians, and that evening the Reunion provided the unique opportunity for Vice-Chancellor, Dr Sizwe Mabizela to present Andy Gray with the Distinguished Old Rhodian Award. Andrew Lofts Gray is awarded the Distinguished Old Rhodian Award as he is an outstanding leader in the pharmacy field both nationally and internationally and epitomizes Rhodes motto 'where leaders learn'.

Oriel House Centenary and Festival Cocktail Celebrations

Old Rhodians Gauteng Chapter Purple Thursday Gathering
Date Released : 01/09/2016Johannesburg, South Africa –The September 1st Purple Thurday gathering brought all Old Rhodians – young and old together and saw the launch of the Old Rhodians’ Gauteng Chapter. The Chapter aims to keep all our ORs interested in our University and the goings on of all of our alumni in the area. give5 Students Fundraising Campaign 2016

Over R83 800.00 was raised by the end of the week, simply from students holding events and asking for donations of R5 and more. Date Released : 12/05/2016Old Rhodian Union Awards R200 000 in Bursaries The 2016 Old Rhodian Union Bursary (ORU) Awards were hosted by the Vice- President, Prof James Gambiza and the Old Rhodian Union Committee on the 12thMay 2016 at Alumni House. 26 Bursaries, totalling R200 000, were awarded to students whose parents or grandparents are Old Rhodians. Administered by the ORU committee, the bursaries awarded are based on a means test and academic achievements.
Sydney Australia Purple Thursday
Date Released : 18/08/2016Prof Di Wilmot, Dean of Faculty of Education, Visited Sydney Australia and invited all Old Rhodians living in the area to come together for a Purple Thursday Gathering. A group of 15 Old Rhodians attended the event and had a thoroughly enjoyable evening meeting each other whilst catching up on the latest news from their alma mater.
