Wasserman has presented a number of conference papers over the past few years, and is part of two international research teams that received funding recently.

The one is a project on media systems in the BRICS countries, a five year project funded by the Finnish Academy:

Prof Wasserman went to Finland for the first working meeting of the BRICS team at the University of Tampere. After that the team traveled to Russia to present papers in a plenary panel of the Moscow Readings conference

Another project is on China's Soft Power, which is funded by the CCFK, a Taiwanese organisation for cultural and knowledge exchange. The core team of the China Soft Power project met in Grahamstown during the BRICS seminar at the Highway Africa conference for their first planning meeting and have embarked on research, including a survey of editors of SA news institutions, to explore their coverage of China in the South African press.
