Celebrating 200 years of isiXhosa as a written language

On the 16th of November 2023, the city of Makhanda was filled with joy and cultural vibrancy as it hosted a momentous celebration marking the 200th anniversary of isiXhosa as a written language. This landmark event was organised by the Rhodes University Library in collaboration with key partners, including DSRAC, Amazwi, SALB, House of Legends, South African National Library, Pansalb and Makana Public Libraries. The event brought together a diverse group of participants, including Language Specialists, esteemed Authors, the Honourable Mayor of Makhanda, The MEC of Arts, Sports and Culture, school learners and the community at large. This event brought together various stakeholders in a shared commitment to preserve and celebrate linguistic diversity.
