The National Symposium on Biological Invasions 2020

It is with regret that we are in the position that we need to postpone this upcoming symposium.  A decision has been made to postpone this symposium until May 2021. Dates to be confirmed.

The organising committee will be in touch via email with all delegates who have already registered and submitted abstracts.

The Centre for Biological Control (CBC) in collaboration with Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (FABI) are hosting the National Symposium on Biological Invasions 2020. This will take place from 13th to 15th May 2020 at the Future Africa conference venue at the University of Pretoria, Tshwane. The symposium is intended for invasion experts, students, managers, and policy makers that are interested in biological invasions and their management in the region. We look forward to welcoming you to the symposium.

The theme for the National Symposium on Biological Invasions is: Africa acting together against Biological Invasions. We invite you to submit your abstracts bearing this theme in mind.  How does your and your teams’ research and work benefit the management of biological invasions in Africa?

The sessions will be planned around Blackburn et al. (2011) unified framework for biological invasions.  Please can you consider this when preparing your abstracts and motivating your students to prepare presentations for the symposium.  The scientific committee, chaired by Professor Martin Hill, Professor Bernard Slippers and Dr Costas Zachariades, are ready to receive your abstracts.

We have invited the Honourable Barbara Creecy, Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries to open the National Symposium.  We have also invited Dr Tsungai Zengeya from the South African National Biodiversity Institute to inform us on status of the second National Status Report on Biological Invasions.

The cost of the symposium will be R850 per day or R2550 (standard rate) for the three days (excluding VAT). This fee will include venue costs, lunch and dinner on both 13 and 14 May 2020 and lunch on 15 May 2020. The fee does not include accommodation costs. Accommodation will need to be booked separately. Please refer to the list of options in close proximity to the venue. There are reduced rates for early bird registration (10% off) and students (15% off) - see details here.
