Rhodes University Student Thakane Masia Explores China Through Chinese Bridge Competition

Rhodes University student Thakane Masia has returned from an unforgettable journey to China, where she represented South Africa in the prestigious Chinese Bridge competition. The international event, which draws participants from across the globe, gave Masia the chance to experience China’s culture, history, and modern lifestyle.

Masia’s trip began in Beijing, where she visited iconic landmarks including the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, the Beijing Olympic Museum, and the world-famous Great Wall of China. “The steep steps were far more challenging than I expected,” she said, quoting the Chinese saying: ‘You are not a real hero until you’ve climbed the Great Wall.’ Despite the very hot summer heat and cultural surprises such as being served hot water with meals—Masia described the city as vibrant and rich in history.

The competition then took her to Wuyishan in Fujian Province, where she sat for the written exam. There, the natural scenery offered a stark contrast to the bustling capital. Masia reflected on the peaceful gardens, mountain views, and her unique cultural experiences, which included attending a live outdoor performance and learning about China’s famous tea culture. “In China, tea is not only about drinking, but about connection and community,” she explained.

The journey continued in Quanzhou and Fuzhou, where contestants delivered oral presentations and showcased their talents. Masia explored Wulin Ancient Village, enjoyed night markets filled with traditional performances, and visited the historic Three Lanes and Seven Alleys district.

Looking back, Masia highlighted how the trip expanded her worldview. She was struck by China’s technological advancements, from hotel robots to mobile apps that deliver almost anything instantly. She also encountered friendly locals who often expressed curiosity about her African culture. “What stayed with me most was how Chinese language and culture brought people from across the globe together,” she said. “I made friends from many different countries who I would never have met otherwise.”

Masia described the experience as both life-changing and inspiring, encouraging others to pursue opportunities to travel and explore different cultures. “From its traditions and history to the warmth of its people, China is a country that broadens horizons and changes perspectives,” she added.
