XU Xuezhen

XU Xuezhen, a candidate of Masters of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL). She has rich experience in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. In 2014, she joined the Critical Language Scholarship Program (CLS) in Guangzhou as an assistant teacher in Mandarin. While at Rhodes (2015-2016), she worked for CIRU for one year as a lecturer to the CHI 2 Studies, and gave Chinese Club class for the Goodsheperd School.

MA Yue

Professor MA Yue was seconded from Jinan University, situated in Guangzhou, Guangdong, PRC. In 2009, he became the first Head of Chinese Studies at Rhodes University. In 2014, Professor Ma moved to the University of Cape Town. In 1994, he was awarded the title of “Guangdong’s New Elite in Education” by the Guangdong Department of Higher Education. He then went on to obtain his PhD in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics in 1999 from the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. He has been teaching English and Chinese as second languages for more than thirty years, and led an expert team to re-introduce the teaching of Chinese in Indonesia, which had been illegal for thirty-five years.

ZHENG Bilian

ZHENG Bilian holds a Masters of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MSTCSOL). She has experience in teaching Chinese as a foreign language at Misamis Union High School in the Philippines, teaching Chinese to the staff of foreign companies in China, and offering Chinese lessons during Summer Chinese School at Jinan University. While at Rhodes (2011-2014), she formed part of the CIRU and taught Chinese to students at the Diocesan School for Girls (DSG).

ZHU Ying

ZHU Ying, a candidate of Masters of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (in progress) at Jinan University in Guangzhou, China, comes from the ethinic minority "Manchu" in China. While at Rhodes (2014) she was a member of CIRU and taught Chinese to students at the Diocesan School for Girls (DSG) and St Andrews' College. She also tutored the university students at Rhodes and maintained the Chinese library at the Chinese Cultural Centre at 36 Somerset Street.

WANG Xiaoping

She worked for CIRU from August 2009 to June 2010. She was a candidate for Masters of Linguisitcs and Applied Linguistics at Jinan University at the time. She was one of the first volunteer Chinese teachers who came to work in South Africa from Jinan University.

WANG Yan

She served at CIRU for the entire academic year between March and December 2011. At the time she was also a Masters student in progress at Jinan University. After her graduation, she joined the teaching staff at the College of Chinese Language and Culture, Jinan University.

LIU Chang

Being one of the earliest teaching staff, she started to work for CIRU since July 2009, until she left in July 2012. During this time she completed the thesis for her Masters studies at Jinan University and was awarded the degree of Masters of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL). She left in July 2012 to continue her MBA study at Alma Graduate School of University of Bologna in Italy.

ZENG Hualan

ZENG Hualan, a candidate of Masters of Arts in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics at Jinan University in Guangzhou, China, has taught Chinese to foreigners such as Indonesian, Korean back in China. She is currently a member of CIRU and teaches Chinese to students at the Diocesan School for Girls 

YANG Yue

YANG Yue holds an MA in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics from Beijing Language and Culture University and is currently a PhD candidate at the Univeristy of Pretoria, South Africa. Since 2001 she has been involved in teaching Chinese as a second or foreign language at Yunan Teachers' University. During 2008 and 2011, she has been teaching at UNISA, South Africa. She joined CIRU in July 2012 and left in July 2014.
