China Week 2009September 16, 2009 By: Kelly Hamilton This year's China Week, from Monday 28 September to Friday 2 October, will be celebrated with a variety of exciting events.
For those interested in economics and the impact of China on Africa, there will be a week-long colloquium with lectures by guests from Jinan University (China), Standard Chartered Bank, the Department of Trade and Industry, the Trade Law Centre of Southern Africa, amongst others. The talks will run daily at 13:15 and 17:15. See an abridged programme below or download the full programme here: China-Africa Economic Relations There will also be a public lecture on Thursday 1 October at 19:00 by Dr. Yoon Jung Park (University of Johannesburg). The lecture is entitled "Faces of China in South Africa: New Chinese migration to the southern tip of Africa, 1970s to the present." It will be held in Eden Grove Blue. For more info, click here. For the more artistically inclined, there will be three Fine Arts Workshops from Tuesday to Thursday at 17:30 in the Exhibition Area in Eden Grove. Calligraphy, paper cutting and Chinese painting will be explored by Ms. Luo Xiaoying, Mr. Zhu Guiming and Mr. Wang Jinshan (all from Jinan University). Two exciting reports from our own Rhodes students who have travelled to China this year will be held. The first, by our Chinese Studies 1 studies, will be a presentation on the whirlwind tour of China that the students took part in the July vacation. This presentation will be given on Tuesday 29 September at 14:30 in Barratt Lecture Theatre 3. For more info, click here. The second will be an exciting photo exhibition by two fourth-year Photojournalism students, who have spent ten days exploring China and its culture as part of their photojournalism projects. The photos will be up all week in the African Media Matrix Foyer. This project is sponsored by the Confucius Institute at Rhodes University. We hope that you can join us!
