Mobilising Multilingualism Awareness

PROPOSAL TO LANGUAGE COMMITTEE

AN ORGANIC APPROACH TO MOBILISING MULTILINGUALISM AWARENESS AT RHODES

A Sub-committee was constituted to look at marketing / publicizing multilingualism and the work of the Language Committee on campus.

The following projects / outputs are tabled for discussion and the committee can brainstorm some aims that guide the following proposed projects, with the possible idea of contributing to a RULC Newsletter, that being part of a flexible strategy to creating multilingual awareness on campus:

MULTILINGUAL RESEARCH

A possible initiative with the support of the Postgraduate Office where an annual publication / Occasional Paper is put together which highlights staff / student research / essays of excellence pertaining to language issues and multilingualism. This can be a university-wide initiative.

MULTILINGUAL REPORTAGE

Identifying key multilingual initiatives and generating reportage around these.

MULTILINGUAL COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND ANNUAL AWARENESS LECTURE

  1. Stimulating debate about multilingualism; hosting seminars or colloquiums on burning issues, thereby supporting the annual Multilingualism Awareness Lecture.
  2. Making visible / raising awareness of the linguistic diversity of the Rhodes community – and even making interventions into the dominant culture that frames this community, with the aim to making it more welcoming to diversity; working with the International Office to highlight the languages spoken on campus and to celebrate the linguistic and cultural diversity.
  3. Creating linkages with Naledi Mbude-Shale’s work in encouraging the use of isiXhosa as MOI in schools; working with the Community Engagement Office.
