Mehrnaz completed her BSc and MSc degrees in Geology and sedimentology at the Tarbiat Moalem University of Tehran (Iran). The emphasis of her MSc project was on the sedimentological/petrological study and sequence stratigraphy of hydrocarbon-bearing Cretaceous carbonate rocks in the south-western part of Iran. She has spent 5 years in the exploration industry working for Iranian national oil and coal companies and also as a lecturer at the University of Jame Elmi Karbordi in Iran. She earned a PhD in geochemistry from the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (Germany) in February 2017, working on the sedimentology, trace element and isotope geochemistry of the Mesoarchaean stromatolitic carbonates of the Pongola Supergroup in South Africa. This was followed by postdoctoral research projects on Precambrian carbonate and BIF at the University of Pretoria (South Africa) and University of Ferdowsi Mashhad (Iran). She joined PRIMOR at Rhodes University in September-2018 and continues research in a broad range of fields related to the chemical composition of ocean and atmosphere in the Archaean and Proterozoic, origin of banded iron formation, Great Oxidation Event, Early life evolution and mining geo-hazard.
