iPrint Printing - Apple Mac (OS X)

Installing a printer on OS X (Apple Macs) is very similar to installing a printer on Windows.

  1. Open your web browser, Safari/Chrome and visit either http://iprintc.ru.ac.za/ipp (staff & departmental printers) or http://iprintf.ru.ac.za/ipp (residence printers)
  2. Scroll down the list of printers and click on the one that applies yo your location. If this is your first time you’ve installed a printer on iPrint, you will be asked to install the iPrint Client. You should only need to install this once. Click OK to continue with the installation.
  3. This should download a disk image file called "iprint.dmg" containing the client install package. Run the installer, and follow the instructions.
  4. Once installed, completely exit (Apple Menu > Quit Safari), then restart your browser window and then visit http://iprintc.ru.ac.za/ipp or http://iprintf.ru.ac.za/ipp once again.
  5. Select the printer you wish to install and click on it to install the printer. Pay attention to whether your browser blocks popups and allow them if necessary.  You may be prompted by the iPrint Client to authenticate with your RU staff/student credentials.
  6. Depending on the printer model and associated driver, iPrint may require that you first install the Driver Package before installing, which places associated PPD filters in your your mac /Library.
    • When prompted, click "Install Driver Package" and "continue" and "allow" with the prompts until the driver package is installed.
    • If prompted by the installer for your username/password during the package installation, this is referring to your device credentials, not your RU credentials.
    • For the Xerox Printer Driver packages, the installer may prompt you to connect to specific printer, but you can skip this and continue to install the software without selecting a printer since iPrint will handle this for us.
  7. Once the necessary driver packages are installed, you should be able to install the printer, with the asssoicated PPD driver and the printer installation should complete successfully.

All residence printers should already have OS X Postscript Printer Description (PPD) files available. However, printers are not extensively tested with Macs and so some may have been inadvertently forgotten. If you discover this to be the case, you can either download the requiste driver from the manufacturer or let us know and we'll install it within iPrint.
