Connecting to off-campus network services

Off-campus Wi-Fi service

Payment

Before trying to connect, please ensure that you have paid both:

  1. the service provider for your complex, listed here (they'll also require that you register your devices with them before you can access the service); as well as
  2. the university.  Please visit the registration pages, from a working Internet connection, such as your cellphone, or eduroam or a public lab on campus.

Once you've done so, configure your devices as follows.

For Android devices
  • Find the Settings menu
  • Ensure Wi-Fi is turned on, and select it to edit Wi-Fi settings
  • Select the Wi-Fi network starting with RUoffcampus for your complex or service provider
  • Enter these settings:
    • EAP method: PEAP
    • Phase-2 authentication: MSCHAPV2
    • CA certificate: Use system certificates
    • Domain: register.ru.ac.za
    • Identity: g00a1234@wf.ru.ac.za
    • Anonymous identity: anonymous@ru.ac.za
    • Password: your Rhodes password
  • Touch Connect

Your device should now automatically connect to Wi-Fi whenever it's in range.

For Windows 10 PCs
  • Click the Wi-Fi icon in the lower right of the screen.
  • Select the Wi-Fi network starting with RUoffcampus for your complex or service provider from the list of Wi-Fi networks and click Connect.
  • Enter your username, g00a1234@wf.ru.ac.za, and password.
  • When asked if you want to continue connecting, click Show certificate details.
  • Check that the Server thumbprint is:
    • 24 88 E8 C9 12 49 DC 95 D0 B0 20 A0 CF C8 27 7A 42 31 BB A9
  • If it matches, click Connect.
  • If it does not match, do not connect.  Click Cancel and notify the I&TS Division.

Your device should now automatically connect to Wi-Fi whenever it's in range.

For Apple iPhone/iPad devices
  • Open Settings from the home screen.
  • Tap Wi-Fi then select eduroam.
  • Enter your username, g00a1234@wf.ru.ac.za, and password, then tap Join.
  • When asked to accept the certificate, tap View Certificate Details then More Details.  Check that the certificate was issued by DigiCert and that the serial number is:
    • 08 D5 8E 49 9E FB B5 21 C5 7D 4E 30 F7 4E D5 FD
  • If it matches, tap < Certificate then Accept Certificate.
  • If it does not match, it is not safe to connect.  Cancel and notify the I&TS Division.

Your device should now automatically connect to Wi-Fi whenever it's in range.

Reporting connection problems

Please report connection problems first to the service provider for your complex (see table).  If they confirm that the service provider network in your complex is working, please contact the student helpdesk in the Library or contact studentsupport@ru.ac.za.
