2024 Departmental Function and Graduation Ceremony


In the April graduation ceremonies, the department celebrated the graduation of 88 BSc. students, 10 BSc. Hons. Students, 3 MSc. students and one PhD student. Of the BSc. students majoring in Biochemistry and/or Microbiology, there were an impressive 27 subject distinctions! On Friday 5th April, at the departmental graduation function, we celebrated with our graduates and their loved ones and awarded the departmental prizes for the top achievers at each level. The winners were:

SA Breweries Prize (Top 3rd year Biochemistry Student): Oratile Makhafula

Duncan/Whiteley Award (Top Biochemistry Honours student registered for MSc in Biochemistry): Coleen Grobler

FP Muirhead & MB Rosenberg Memorial Prize (Top 3rd year Microbiology Student): Oratile Makhafula

Departmental Biochemistry award (Top 3rd year student entering Biochemistry Honours): Kolitsoe Mofuketsoane

Departmental Microbiology award (Top 3rd year student entering Microbiology Honours): Tawana Chieza

Merck prize: (Top Microbiology Hons student registered for MSc in Microbiology): Siyabonga Phoswa

We also congratulated Dr Ronal Tanui on obtaining his PhD, a significant achievement and milestone in a scientist’s career.
