Mathapelo is the newest academic staff to join the Anthropology department, lecturing second year and Honours students. She is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Cape Town. Her doctoral thesis looks at the trauma experienced after being exposed to explosions or blasts. 

Mathapelo holds a BA in Anthropology and Archaeology, a BSc Honours in Physical Anthropology, a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE) and a Masters in Archaeology all from the University of Pretoria. Her broader research interests cover areas of forensic and biological anthropology, and she currently supervises Honours students under these research areas.
