Our History

The Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology of Rhodes University was established in its current format in 2014. Prior to this, before the establishment of the Biotechnology Innovation Centre as a separate entity, it was known as the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology & Biotechnology (BMB). The latter was established in 1989 as an amalgamation of two existing Departments under the leadership of Prof John Duncan. Microbiology had developed as a sub-department of Botany and established as an independent Department in 1974 under Prof David Woods. Biochemistry developed within the Chemistry Department with Prof Duncan appointed first head in 1984. The vision of the original BMB department was “To be an International Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Research in Biochemistry, Microbiology and Biotechnology” with the mission of “Equipping individuals for life, through the development of knowledge and independent thought.
