First year at Rhodes and choosing a Major?

Come to the Linguistics orientation lecture on 11 February, at 15h10 in the "Chemistry Major" lecture theatre.

Studying at university is an exhilarating experience. There are so many exciting possibilities to study – and you get to choose! But the choices can be intimidating: most people have never even heard of some of the subjects that can be studied. So it can be a perplexing task to choose your majors and other subjects.

Linguistics is the study of language and how it is used in society, in advertising, politics and the media. We examine the role of language in society, how we use different types of language in different contexts. And we also explore some of the fundamental questions: “what is language really?”

If you enjoy language and communication, writing, then Linguistics could be for you. If you are thinking of a career involving journalism, teaching, law, advertising, editing, media or psychology, then Linguistics is invaluable. Since we use language every day for every task, language is an important component of any career. This is why linguistics is an excellent combination with almost every Humanities and Social science subject.
