The course presenter is Associate Professor Gary Baines of the History Department. Required reading is Beyond the Border War: New Perspectives on Southern Africa's late Cold War Conflicts (Unisa Press, 2008) edited by Gary Baines and Peter Vale.

Both authors are still active in researching Cold War Studies. Baines is currently researching a new book on the Border War, while Vale has contributed entries in a recently published encyclopaedia on the Cold War issued in the United States.

Over the past years, a number of special guests have been invited to contribute to the course. These have included South African politicians and soldiers who were directly involved in the Cold War events.
