Biological assessment is important for assessing the health of rivers systems, the extent of human impact on these systems and for deciding on rehabilitation measures for impacted river systems. A paper that looks at the implementation of bioassessment globally and river rehabilitation, which was co-authored by Prof Odume, the authors conclude that:

  1. There is an urgent need to develop a transcontinental team to elaborate and improve technical guidelines for implementation of biological monitoring programme and river rehabilitation
  2. There is a need to establish a common financial and technical framework for managing international catchments in terms of bio assessment and river rehabilitation
  3. There is a need to prove expert teams through the United Nations Environment Programme to support biomonitoring, bio assessment and river rehabilitation knowledge globally.
