This project aims at improving sustainable development in the Zambezi river basin through the development of optimal and coordinated reservoir operating policies that balance water uses for hydropower generation, irrigation, fisheries and the environment. Economically efficient, socially acceptable and technically implementable reservoir operating policies are the key deliverables of this project. The specific objectives of this project include:

  1. To develop an optimal, coordinated, weekly/monthly operating strategies for existing and planned hydropower schemes in the Zambezi river basin taking into account current and forecasted hydrologic conditions.
  2. Identification of consensual operating strategies together with stakeholders and policymakers.
  3. Capacity building for relevant Stakeholders: Awareness of current and potential operating strategies and their constraints. Policymakers: Improved management and compensation within the basin.
