Professional Communication for Accountants

This course is intended to enhance the spoken, written and visual communicative competencies of Accounting students, usually in their second academic year at Rhodes University. Professional Communication for Accountants is designed, managed, and taught primarily by the Department of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies, in collaboration with the Department of Accounting. The course is a version of Professional Communication, a course initiated by the Commerce faculty in response to complaints from the business sector that their newly employed graduates lacked adequate language and communication skills. While exposing students to some linguistic theory, this course is essentially experiential and practical. Its aim is to develop graduates' communicative competence for work in the Accounting sector.

The course has a service-learning component in which students work with work-readiness students from the Assumption Development Centre, Joza.  They collaborate to produce a Community Engaged Integrated Assignment, in which students assist a local small business in developing a communication strategy.

Professional Communication is a one-semester course assessed entirely through coursework, with no examination.
