We are thrilled to announce a significant new initiative from the Department of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies at Rhodes University, in collaboration with Dr. Kristina Riedel from the Wits University Department of Linguistics: the second Seshegopuo Linguistics Winter School, taking place from 30 June to 4 July 2025.

This exciting postgraduate training initiative is set to bring together early-career linguists and postgraduate students from across Africa and beyond for an immersive and intellectually stimulating week right here at Rhodes. The Seshegopuo Linguistics Winter School stands out for its unique emphasis on African languages, its commitment to methodological openness, and its strong grounding in real-world data analysis—from theoretical explorations to cutting-edge corpus and experimental work. This truly positions our departments and universities at the forefront of linguistic scholarship on the continent.

The school is specifically designed for postgraduate students keen on working with linguistic data, particularly morphosyntactic and/or phonological data, using corpus, experimental, or theoretical approaches. While participants don't need prior experience with these specific methods or theories, a solid foundation in General Linguistics and ideally some experience in collecting and working with linguistic data are beneficial.

We are incredibly proud to offer this high-calibre programme free of charge to all accepted postgraduate students and recent graduates. There are no tuition or registration fees, and participants will be provided with lunch and teas throughout the week, ensuring an accessible and enriching experience for all.

We look forward to a successful and inspiring Winter School and to further cementing Rhodes University's and Wits University's reputations as hubs of academic excellence in Linguistics.
