Roundtable Discussion

The Future Earth Africa Hub Leadership Centre (FEAHLC) held a roundtable discussion on Wednesday, 14th of February 2024 for the Rhodes University community. The discussion’s main aim was to introduce and explain the current and future work of the Leadership Centre. The roundtable was held in a hybrid mode, with physical attendance at 7 Prince Alfred Street (the ISER Annex building) on campus, and virtually via the MS Teams webinar platform. More than 30 people registered to attend the event virtually, and the seminar room was full on the day. Besides attendees from Rhodes University, there were also participants from the NRF and the FEAHLC’s implementing and consortium partners. Those are the University of Pretoria, the Universities of Fort Hare, Limpopo, and Witwatersrand, respectively. The Rhodes University’s DVC for Research, Innovation, and Strategic Partnerships opened the event and commended the team for a great example of collaborative research partnership.

The questions answered by the team’s presentations included the following:

  • What are the Future Earth and Global Research Hubs?
  • What is the nature of the FEAHLC at Rhodes and UP?
  • What is Sustainability Science and Practice globally and what can it look and feel like in Africa?
  • How can we support and conduct Sustainability Science in Africa? and
  • How do we do this through Science Cluster networks?

From the engaged discussions, the event was successful at introducing the centre and at pointing out ways for further collaborations in the future. There is currently a high level of interest shown by the university’s community to participate in the Centre’s activities.
