Community Engagement Awards

Every year, Rhodes University Community Engagement hosts an awards evening to celebrate the accomplishments, dedication and love shown by Makhanda's engaged citizenry, student community and researchers. The Community Engagement Awards recognise a year of excellence in Makhanda’s community engagement space. It provides an opportunity for us all to acknowledge and share our pride  for our community's committment to brightening the corners where they are.

Nominees for awards and key players in the University's management structures are invited to the small ceremony held towards the end of each year once our active citizenship programmes have ended for the year. At this event, we take a moment to recognize and acknowledge those who are act to build bridges through interventions aimed at the public and transformation of our town and beyond. The event brings together volunteers and student leaders from across our citizenship programmes, as well as early engaged researchers and the community partners who make it all possible.

The Awards are also an important part of reaffirming the student leaders and volunteer managers of our programmes, all of whom go above and beyond the calls of duty throughout the year to ensure the best possible experience for everyone involved in the project. We encourage everyone who has been part of Community Engagement every year to take the oportunity to reflect upon the past year, enjoy the successes and heal from the challenges.

The Community Engagement Awards have taken place since 2012.

Nominate volunteers, researchers and community partners who have gone above and beyond for your programmes or initiatives.

There are five award categories:
