Gilbert Street consists of 16 postgraduate students accommodated in 5 Gilbert Street, 6 Gilbert Street and the Gilbert Units. 5 Gilbert Street is a house that accommodates 5 students, 6 Gilbert Street is a house that accommodates 3 students and the Gilbert Units accommodates 8 students in individual Units. 

Students housed in the Gilbert Units have access to the facilities at 5 Gilbert Street. This includes the laundry, kitchen and lounge area with a printer. 5 Gilbert Street is located directly above the Gilbert Units. Students residing at 6 Gilbert Street have a laundry, kitchen and lounge area.

WiFi lets Students connect to Resnet (internet access) in their rooms. Technical support is typically provided by the Sub-Wardens. The printing facilities are available at 5 Gilbert Street (one communal printer in the lounge area) and it is charged on each student’s printing balance found online on the Rhodes University Student Support System (ROSS). 

The rooms are spacious and well-equipped with: 

• WiFia notice board,
• a wall-mounted bar heater,
• a waste paper basket,
• a shower basin,
• a shower mat and 
• a water bucket.

Students are provided with linen by the Housekeeping staff:- duvet, duvet cover, bedding sheet, mattress cover, two pillows, two pillowcases, winter blanket, curtains and inner net curtains. Students can bring their own linen but they are then responsible for the laundering. The residence has a laundry area with washing machines and tumble dryers. 

The maintenance and cleaning of the common areas are attended to by Rhodes Housekeeping staff. Students are expected to maintain order in their personal rooms for the duration of their stay. 

5 Gilbert Street House

5 Gilbert Street consists of 5 single rooms. Students share two bathrooms, a kitchen and a lounge area. There is a small braai area next to 5 Gilbert Street House that offers the opportunity for relaxed social gatherings on weekends, accessible to all postgraduate students. 5 Gilbert Street is surrounded by a small and charming garden that is maintained by Rhodes University staff. A washing line is available next to the House.

6 Gilbert Street House

6 Gilbert Street is a double-story stand-alone house for 3 students. Shared facilities downstairs include a small lounge area. The residents also have a kitchen area that has a fridge, stove, microwave and cupboards. Another shared facility includes a laundry room that has a washing machine and a tumble dryer.  

Gilbert Postgraduate Units

The Gilbert Units offer private and convenient accommodation while having access to 5 Gilbert Street situated directly above. The shared facilities are the laundry, kitchen and lounge area. The Gilbert Units consist of eight single rooms each with an ensuite bathroom and study space.
