Campus Protection Unit:

The Campus Protection Unit (CPU), which operates from Rhodes Avenue adjacent to Hobson House, is committed to protecting the safety of the Rhodes community and its property. Every person on campus is encouraged to exercise caution and common sense with regards to the security of persons and property.

Counselling Centre and Harassment Office Services:

The Counselling Centre is situated on the top floor of the Steven Biko Building (off Prince Alfred Street). Professional, registered psychologists and interns are available to discuss a variety of issues related to students’ mental health and wellbeing. If you would like to make an appointment, please call the Counselling Centre (046 603 7070) or counsellingcentre@ru.ac.za. Please note that the harassment office is situated at the Counselling Centre.

Health Care Centre:

The Health Care Centre is situated on Lucas Avenue, diagonally across from the Campus Protection Unit (CPU). The nursing staff in the Health Care Centre are ready to provide a professional and caring service to you during your time as a student at Rhodes University. If you would like to make an appointment, please make an appointment online via ROSS, call 046 603 8523 | email: healthcarecentre@ru.ac.za. Please ensure that you take your student card, ID card and your medical aid card (if you have a medical aid) with you.

ER24 Services:

The University has contracted ER24 to provide emergency medical services and/or trauma counselling services to all  Rhodes University students. The services are available 24 hours a day; however, it is encouraged that students make use of the Rhodes Health Care Centre or Rhodes Counselling Centre as the first option during working hours. Please contact ER24 as your second option / other alternative, if the two Rhodes Centres are not available e.g. fully booked. 

After-hours medical/ psychological services (ER 24)
For any after-hours medical emergency or telephonic trauma counselling please contact ER24 at 010 205 3068.
Should you find yourself involved in a medical emergency; one call to 010 205 3068 will activate assistance through the ER24 national 24-hour Emergency Contact Centre. Please ensure that you program this number into your cellphone speed dial for ease of use. When making the call please ensure that you identify yourself as a Student of Rhodes University, so that your call is handled in the most efficient manner.
 
ER24 Agreement Benefit Summary:

• Emergency Medical Response and stabilization:  Call the ER24 dedicated number for assistance.

• Emergency Medical Transportation to Settlers Hospital: This service is included; which means if you do not have medical aid, you will still receive services under this agreement at no additional cost to you.

• Medical Hotline: while the ambulance is making its way to the location you provided, ER24 trained personnel will be able to assist you with pre-arrival medical instructions if needed.

• Medical Information Line: ER24 medical personnel, including paramedics, nurses and doctors, will be available 24 hours a day to provide general medical assistance. This is an advisory and information service, as a telephonic conversation does not permit an accurate diagnosis.

• Telephonic Trauma Counselling Line: ER24’s Trauma Support team will be able to provide support and trauma counselling to you. Telephonic counselling services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

NB: Always call the ER 24 number, in the event that a student calls GuardMed directly, one will be personally liable for the costs.

For any Housekeeping or Maintenance issues that require attention; please complete the Hobson Hall Maintenance Google Form. Alternatively, please contact the Residence Sub-Warden or send a detailed email to the Hobson Hall Administrator (hobsonhall@ru.ac.za).
