Campus Protection Unit:

The Campus Protection Unit (CPU), which operates from Rhodes Avenue adjacent to Hobson House, is committed to protecting the safety of the Rhodes community and its property. Every person on campus is encouraged to exercise caution and common sense with regards to the security of persons and property.

 

The Counselling Centre and Harassment Office:

The Student Counselling Centre is located on the top floor of the Bantu Stephen Biko Building, and they offer free professional support to all Rhodes University students facing psychological challenges. Guided by a holistic wellness approach, the Centre assists students in their physical, academic, social, emotional, and spiritual well-being while ensuring strict confidentiality.

 

Services Provided:

  • Individual Counselling: Private, confidential sessions for personal concerns.
  • Relationship Counselling: Support for navigating interpersonal issues.
  • Group Therapy: Sessions for students with shared interests or goals.
  • Crisis Support: An after-hours emergency line (010 205 3068) and immediate assistance during office hours for psychological emergencies.
  • Workshops: Covering topics such as time management, stress management, and exam preparation.
  • Self-Help Resources: Pamphlets and materials on various topics.
  • Referrals: Guidance to other helpful services if needed.

Health Care Centre:

The Health Care Centre is located on Lucas Avenue, diagonally across from the Campus Protection Unit (CPU). The nursing staff in the Health Care Centre are ready to provide professional, compassionate care throughout your journey at Rhodes University.

 

Appointments:

To book a consultation, use the online ROSS system, call 046 603 8523 or email healthcarecentre@ru.ac.za. Please ensure that you take your student card, ID card, and medical aid card (if you have a medical aid) with you.

 

Operating Hours

During Term Time:

  • Monday - Friday: 08:00–16:30
  • Saturday, Sunday, and Public Holidays: 08:00–13:00

During University Vacations:

  • Monday - Friday: 09:30–12:30 (After 12:30, call 010 205 3068)
  • After-hours (16:30–08:00 or weekends): contact ER24 at 010 205 3068 for emergencies.

 

ER24 Services:

Rhodes University has partnered with ER24 to provide 24/7 emergency medical assistance and trauma counselling for all students. While students are encouraged to use the Health Care Centre or Counselling Centre during regular hours, ER24 is available as an alternative when these services are unavailable.

 

After-Hours Assistance (ER24):

For medical emergencies or trauma counselling outside regular hours, call 010 205 3068. ER24's 24-hour Emergency Contact Centre will activate assistance immediately. Save this number on your phone for quick access. Identify yourself as a Rhodes University student for efficient handling of your request.

 

ER24 Agreement Benefits:

  • Emergency Medical Response & Stabilization: Immediate on-site assistance.
  • Emergency Medical Transportation: Free transport to Settlers Hospital, even without medical aid.
  • Medical Hotline: Receive pre-arrival instructions while waiting for help.
  • Medical Information Line: Access 24/7 guidance from paramedics, nurses, and doctors.
  • Telephonic Trauma Counselling: Around-the-clock support from ER24’s trauma specialists.

For any Housekeeping or Maintenance issues that require attention, please complete the Hobson Hall Maintenance Google Form. Urgent matters (i.e., tap or toilet running) should be directed to the Housekeeper, Residence Student Assistants or Residence Manager or send a detailed email to the Hobson Hall Administrator (hobsonhall@ru.ac.za).
