UNLOCKING OPPORTUNITIES: ACTION SIMON’S TRIUMPH WITH THE AWARMN SCHOLARSHIP

In a tale of determination and academic excellence, I Action Simon recently marked a significant milestone in my educational journey. On the 19th of August 2021, I received the life-changing news of being awarded the prestigious African Water Resources Mobility Network (AWaRMN) Scholarship. This scholarship paved my way to pursue a Master's of Technology in Applied Hydrobiology at the Federal University of Technology Minna (FUTMinna), Nigeria. After years of a deliberate search for a graduate study opportunity, I finally found the key to unlock doors that I previously could only dream of.

On the 24th of September 2021, I embarked on a journey to Nigeria, arriving on the 25th of September 2021, ready to immerse myself in the enriching academic environment at FUTMinna. During the program, I had the privilege of learning from some of the best minds in Hydrobiology. The academic experience was complemented by interactions with esteemed lecturers, fellow students, and community members. The rich cultural tapestry of the region and the vibrant exchange with international scholars added a fascinating dimension to my stay. One of the highlights of my academic journey was the opportunity to contribute to the field through groundbreaking research. My Master's thesis focused on assessing the influence of water column and sediment variables on macroinvertebrate community patterns in North Central Nigeria. This research has already borne fruit, co-authoring one research paper and another manuscript currently under peer review in a Q1 journal. My academic prowess extended beyond the confines of the university as I proudly presented my research findings at two international conferences: the 15th Annual Conference of the Zoological Society of Nigeria (ZSN) at the University of Lagos in November 2022 and the 4th Annual Conference of the Freshwater Biology Association of Nigeria (FBAN) at Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, in July 2023.

The culmination of my academic journey occurred on the 5th of July 2023, when I was awarded a Master's of Technology in Zoology (Applied Hydrobiology) from the Federal University of Technology Minna. To me, this achievement represents not only the fulfillment of a dream but also the commencement of a journey to address societal challenges, particularly those related to water resources. As I reflect on this transformative experience, the passion to contribute meaningfully to society and tackle water resource challenges burns brighter than ever. My story of academic triumph serves as an inspiration to aspiring scholars, demonstrating that with perseverance and dedication, dreams can indeed become a reality.
