Zaccheus Shehu had been searching for a PhD opportunity in the field of water, but had given up hope until he applied for the African Water Resources Mobility Network program. When he received the acceptance email, he couldn't believe his luck. He arrived in Uganda on January 8th, 2021 and began his studies at Makerere University.

Mr. Shehu was thrilled to be studying at such a prestigious university and snapped a memorial picture before entering the department of chemistry. Little did he know that his time at Makerere University would be even more memorable - his wife joined him in Uganda in April 2021, and they welcomed a baby girl in July of the same year.

Despite these exciting personal developments, Mr. Shehu remained focused on his PhD project, which is on the removal of pharmaceuticals from water using magnetic nanocomposites. He had the opportunity to use HPLC, XRD, DLS, and SEM/EDX instruments, and also conducted water sample collection around Lake Victoria.

Mr. Shehu is grateful for the opportunity provided by the African Water Resources Mobility Network program and looks forward to applying his knowledge and skills to make a positive impact in his community and beyond.
