New Coin: Guidelines for Contributors

New Coin appears twice a year in winter and early summer, but contributions of
unpublished poems are welcomed at any time. Following the guidelines below will
make the editors’ work much easier.

  • All submissions should be emailed to newcoin@ru.ac.za.
  • The submissions should be Word documents, a 12-point font should be used
unless a special effect is desired and double line spacing is preferred.
  • In addition, the pages should be numbered and the contributor’s name and
email address should appear at the foot of each page. (Where a poem’s
layout is complex, the Word document may be accompanied by a pdf.)
  • No more than 5 pages of poetry should be submitted at any one time.
  • In an email accompanying the submission, contributors should confirm that
the submission consists of previously unpublished work and indicate whether
they would be prepared to have their poems published on New Coin’s social
media pages if the editors wish to do so. (Should this occur, full credit will be
given to the poet and they will be tagged when the post is uploaded.)

We aim to acknowledge submissions within two weeks, but final decisions on
publication only occur close to the date of publication.

A free copy of the edition in which their poems appear will be provided to all
contributors and arrangements for delivery will be made once the journal is in press.
Contributors retain the copyright on their submissions, but should any poem be
published again, it is conventional to credit New Coin as the place of first publication.
