Dr Sukhmani Mantel taught a three day Introduction to GIS course at Stenden South Africa (stenden.ac.za/) in Port Alfred in the first week of March 2018. This is the second year that the course is being taught and it is targeted to students enrolled in Bachelor of Business Administration Disaster Management. The course has been designed to use free GIS platforms and online datasets (ArcGIS Online and other products related to flooding, drought, food security, etc.) to create maps, interrogate online datasets and conduct basic analyses related to disaster planning and management. Until now this course has been taught to third year students, but starting this year it will be taught to first year students and two new courses that build on the skills learnt in the basic course will be developed for second and third year students.
