Simon Howell is an Andrew Mellon Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Rhodes University, based in the departments of politics and psychology. He completed his PhD at Rhodes University in late 2011, having upgraded his MA in 2009. Simon’s doctoral thesis critiqued the logic of the “war on drugs” both historically and conceptually, with the express aim of finding more just means and mechanisms by which we might hope to articulate the “problem” that drug use presents to us. He is currently working on an analysis of the way in which same-sex marriage has been articulated in South African online media, and a critique of the use of 4D foetal scans in abortion legislation.
