Prof Thron's seminar.

Professor Thron, an Associate Professor in the Department of Science and Mathematics at Texas A&M University-Central Texas, presented a highly informative seminar entitled A bird's eye overview of machine learning. The seminar was attended primarily by the staff and postgraduate students in the Departments of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics.

Machine learning is the engine that powers the impressive capabilities of modern AI, such as self-driving cars and ChatGPT.  It has also become wildly popular throughout engineering and all of the sciences.
Unfortunately, much machine learning research is either deeply flawed or fundamentally wrong because of misapplication of machine learning principles.

Dr Thron layed out the mathematical foundations of machine learning, and used practical examples to point out best practices as well as pitfalls in the use of machine learning  in applications that relate to predictive models. In addition he provided excellent resources for getting up to speed quickly in the field.
