Professor Irek Szyszkowski

Professor Szyszkowski studied at Maria Curie-Sklodowska University (M.Sc, Ph.D.) in Lublin, Poland. He was subsequently appointed to various academic positions at the Institute of Mathematics, Maria Curie-Sklodowska University (1983-1990). He joined the Department of Mathematics at the University of Swaziland in 1990. He was appointed as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Statistics at Rhodes University in 1991 and promoted to Associate Professor in 1999. He taught most of the common undergraduate courses in Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics and taught postgraduate courses in Information Theory, Econometrics, General Linear Models, Generalized Linear Models, Stochastic Processes, Financial Statistics and Queueing Theory. Professor Szyszkowski specialized in Probability and Stochastic Processes. His main research interests were in Limit Theorems.

The staff and students wish Professor Szyszkowki all the best in his retirement. Irek’s dry sense of humour and enthusiasm for "advanced" mathematics kept the students engaged and interested during his classes. Professor Szyszkowski made an immense contribution within the department and he will be missed.
