Statistics for Commerce (STA 1C2)

Statistics 1C2 is a service course for BCom, BBusSc, BAcc, BEcon and BSc (InfSys) degrees. The content of this course is in accordance to the requirements set out by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) and is approved by the departments of Accounting, Economics and Management. The course is offered in the second semester of the year.

The aims of this course are:

  •  To acquaint the student with those basic concepts and techniques of Statistics that are most useful in the commercial disciplines.
  •  To produce students who are data managers, statistical thinkers, analyzers and decision makers.
  •  To provide the necessary background to quantitative techniques that will be used in core courses such as Accounting, Economics, Management, Finance, Auditing and Financial Management that will subsequently lead to career opportunities as Actuarial Scientists, Management Accountants, Cost Accountants, Investment Analysts and others.

The goal of the course is to provide students will knowledge of those fundamental concepts and techniques of Statistics that are encountered in business.
