O-Week at Rhodes University was an unforgettable experience that set the tone for the academic year ahead. As a female residence, we had the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities designed to foster connections and build a sense of community among new students. One of the highlights was Prince Alfred & Allan Gray House combined coming second overall in the RU Jamming competition.
We had a games night that was organised by the Prince Alfred House Committee. This event was a way to break the ice, with everyone participating in various games that encouraged teamwork and laughter. It was a great opportunity to meet fellow residents, share stories, and start forming friendships that will last throughout our time at university.
We had several meet-and-greet events with other residences, both female and male. These gatherings provided a relaxed environment for us to mingle and get to know each other. It was refreshing to see a diverse group of individuals coming together, all eager to start their university journey.
Prince Alfred joined Calata House for the second Community Engagement Orientation Session. This session introduced first years to the South African landscape, and its inequalities, and unlearning the mindset that University is just a place for getting your degree and then leaving.
Our first years attended the RU Community Engagement Showcase.
We spoke about the importance of realistic goal setting and how to deal with academic pressure. The Seniors also shared their past experiences and how they had dealt with the change and adapting to university life and pressure.
Prince Alfred and Allan Gray House collaborated to hold a academic mentor/mentee picnic get together. The purpose of this event was to get mentors and mentees comfortable with each other in a casual environment .
