Classics at The Castle presented an evening with something different and superb at the Springtime Sax Soiree on Friday, 4 October.
The performer of the soiree was Paul Richard, born in France in 1986, who started playing the saxophone at the age of eight and gained a place at the Conservatoire National de Region de Besancon in 2002.
Paul has obtained his B Musicology from the University of Franche-Comte and won first prize for Chamber Music. He has also studied with acclaimed sax teacher, Cecile Dubois, and in 2010 he was named Winner Unanimously with Felicitations by the Music Competition Jury of Epinal in the same year. Paul moved to South Africa to teach saxophone and for the past few years he has been furthering his studies at Rhodes University.
Now an experienced music teacher, Paul has been an ensemble performer with wind bands, big bands, sax quartets and more. His performance at Richmond House saw the music room filled with an eager audience, ready to hear something different and they were not disappointed. The programme consisted of Paul performing classical music by composers such as Bach, Paganini, Salleras, Clare Loveday and more.
The general consensus from the audience regarding the performance was, simply put, "different and extraordinary". The performance saw Paul play complex music superbly and emotively. The concert was the 20th to be performed at The Castle and owner, Sue Gordon, outdid herself by bringing yet another cultural and entertaining evening to the Kowie community.
