Rhodes University’s Commerce Extended Studies Programme (CESP), in collaboration with Investec, hosted its annual awards ceremony on September 10th at the Settlers Monument. The event honoured students who achieved exceptional results in Semester 1, with top-performing students receiving cash prizes in recognition of their hard work and dedication. The ceremony also paid tribute to mentors, final-year students, and alumni who have played a vital role in the success of the program over the years, creating a moment of celebration for the entire CESP community.
Serving as programme directors, Mr Shammah Mkansi and Ms Lisakhanya Mohlomi set a lively and energetic tone for the evening. Among the distinguished guests were the Head of Corporate Social Investment at Investec, Mr Setlogane Manchidi, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mabokang Monnapula-Mapesela, the Acting Dean of Commerce, Professor Lynette Louw, Prof Tshidi Mohapeloa, the incoming Dean of Commerce from 2026, the Deputy Dean of Commerce, Teaching and Learning, Dr Xolile Antoni, the Head of Department at CHERTL, Professor Jo-Anne Vorster, and staff of the Commerce Faculty. Professor Louw opened the proceedings by warmly welcoming guests and reflecting on the purpose of the occasion. She emphasised that the evening was about celebrating students and affirming their efforts. “Today is about celebrating students. Their hard work and dedication will be recognised, and every distinction will be acknowledged,” she said. She extended her congratulations not only to the top achievers but to every student present, affirming that each one of them is seen. Professor Louw also acknowledged the vital role of mentors and the support of Investec, thanking them for their continued belief in the program and its students.
The programme directors then invited Ms Ziyanda Saola to share her reflections as a student in the Commerce Extended Studies Programme. She expressed her gratitude for the opportunities and support the programme has provided, describing it as a foundation that nurtures growth and potential. “This programme is your foundation, and it speaks to the value of your potential. It helps you figure out the path you want to take in the future,” she said, encouraging fellow students to embrace the journey and discover their own direction.
This was followed by an inspiring address from Mr Setlogane Manchidi, Head of Investec’s Corporate Social Investment. He spoke about the importance of nurturing potential and creating opportunities where they are often scarce. “There is immense potential in each of you, but sadly, opportunity is limited. That is why we go out of our way to support and open doors,” he said. Known for his warmth and uplifting presence, Mr Manchidi encouraged students to strive for more than just adequacy. “It is not good enough to be good; we must strive to be excellent,” he concluded, leaving the audience both inspired and motivated.
The highlight of the evening came with the awards presentations. Mr Simba Gotora, the CESP Coordinator began by presenting the merit and cash awards. This was followed by the recognition of the top achievers, presented by Mr Manchidi, Prof Vorster, and Mrs Thembisa Kgodisang. The final honours were the mentorship awards, acknowledging the commitment and guidance of mentors within the program, presented by Mr Manchidi and Professor Vorster. Each moment of recognition was met with applause, culminating in a photography session where award recipients celebrated alongside distinguished guests.
To conclude the evening, Mr Shammah Mkansi invited Ms Sisonke Mawonga to deliver the vote of thanks. Soon-to-be Dr Mawonga, she expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Investec, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, faculty members, colleagues from CHERTL, and students for their presence and support. She highlighted the invaluable role of Investec in empowering students through education and affirmed the importance of continued collaboration between the university and its partners.
The ceremony was not only a recognition of academic achievement but also a celebration of perseverance, mentorship, and opportunity. It reinforced the spirit of the Commerce Extended Studies Programme as a community where students are seen, supported, and encouraged to realise their potential.
