Prospective Postgraduates

Rhodes Univeristy places a strong emphasis on postgraduate training and research, and has the highest per capita research output of any university in South Africa. The Botany Department has a strong research tradition, and a long-standing ethic of research excellence.

Rhodes University is ideally situated for botanical studies, being positioned close to five major biomes in the Albany centre of plant endemism. The university is well equipped, and students will enjoy access to a range of modern research facilities and expertise, including an Electron Microscope Unit, DNA sequencing facility, Fluorescence microscopes, controlled growth chambers, chlorophyll fluorimeters and Infra Red Gas Analyses (IRGA’s), green houses and tunnels, computer facilities and the Selmar Schonland Herbarium, which houses over 200,000 plant specimens.
