Warden's welcome

A very warm Welcome to Phelps

We (warden, sub-wardens, house committee and seniors) work together to provide a supportive home away from home for all who join our Phelps family.

Phelps House is one of the most convenient and central locations on campus. It is a relatively small residence, with 50 single rooms. It had been opened for students in 1939 and it’s been named after Archbishop Phelps, a much loved Bishop of Grahamstown who died in 1938 (Biographies Hall of Fame, 2014).

At Phelps our main goal is to create an environment for you where obtaining your degree would be a fun and happy experience. We have strong academic success and while you are focussing on getting your degree, we encourage you to get involved in the campus activities, sporting, community engagement, committees, societies and lots more that will help you discovering and growing your own skills, talents and sense of responsibility. We value and respect friendship and genuine concern for one another.

Phelps House has two common rooms where you can relax, as well as a laundry room. All rooms have a single bed, a basin, wall-mounted heater, built-in wardrobe, desk and chair and are connected to wireless internet. Every student is provided with linen, though you may bring your own. The residence has a printer that you can connect to from your laptop and there is a computer in the common room you may use for your studies.

As warden of Phelps my door is always open for any questions or concerns you may have. My aim is also to provide you with as much support as you need to perform at your best. Mentor support of senior students who have been at Rhodes is also available to you.

Phelps House has an excellent team of two sub-wardens and seven committee members to help you experience a welcoming orientation week and beyond. They are like big sisters able to give you valuable tips and support in your first year – a time to make new friends and learn. You can be guaranteed that every effort is being taken to ensure that your transition into Phelps house and university life will be a smooth and seamless one. We are also looking forward to your positive contribution as member of the Phelps family and Rhodes.

I am looking forward to welcome you in the Phelps family and meet you in person.
