Karl Schoemaker Exhibition

Port Elizabeth -based professional photographer Karl Schoemaker will exhibit images collected on assignments in Africa and South America, at the Athenaeum from 23 August to 5 September 2013.

Schoemaker is a professional photographer with Work at Play Photography & Design . He uses the travel opportunities that come his way through commercial, industrial and aerial photographic work to collect images from around the world. This exhibition is his second in Port Elizabeth .

Having completed an Honours degree in Fine Art (Photography) at Rhodes University under the tutelage of renowned South African photographer Obie Oberholzer, Schoemaker started out as a photographer in Johannesburg . His career path saw him veer into the corporate world of information technology and knowledge management until, in 2009, he moved to Port Elizabeth and returned to photography full time.

Schoemaker concurs with Elliot Erwitt’s view that “photography is an art of observation. It has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them”. In this exhibition, he sets out to share not only what he has seen in the many extraordinary places he has visited, but also how he has seen. He invites viewers to adopt new perspectives and surprises with the unexpected beauty in the everyday.

In presenting the images, some black-and-white and some colour, Schoemaker has not employed digital manipulation other than using technology to “do what I would have done in the days of hand-printing”, in order to keep the images true to what he saw through the camera lens.

All the photographs are presented on canvas, ranging in size from A3 to 2m wide.

The exhibition will open between 09:00 and 17:00 on weekdays at the Athenaeum from 25 August to 5 September 2013. The Athenaeum is on the corner Castle Hill and Belmont Terrace, Central opposite the Supreme Court.
