IsiXhosa Communication Skills Course – Beginner Level

The African Language Studies Section of the School of Languages and Literatures, in collaboration with the HR Division will be offering a Beginner Level isiXhosa Communication Skills course from 17 August – 25 October 2017. The venue will be the African languages Seminar room, in the new School of Languages and Literatures building.

 Course administration:

  • The course will initially be offered to staff members only. If insufficient numbers apply, the course will then be opened to relatives of staff and public members.
  • Staff will be expected to sign a service contract whereby if the course is not successfully completed the members will be responsible for the individual course fee. The course fee will be determined by the total cost divided by number of staff and is estimated at R600.00 per member.
  • Participants will be expected to buy their own dictionaries at an estimate cost of R200.

The Beginner classes will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12h15-13h30 OR 16h00-17h15 on both days.

The IsiXhosa Communication Skills course (beginner level) equips participants with linguistic skills so that they are able to conduct a basic conversation with isiXhosa speaking people, both at work and outside of work. It also raises awareness and sensitivity on cultural issues that are critical in successful communication with amaXhosa (people speaking isiXhosa), or other multilingual contexts or multicultural contexts.

Unlike many second language learning courses, the course focuses on speaking, not on the grammar of the language. Grammar is only taught where it facilitates speaking.

Do you want thetha (to speak) and be part of a multilingual Rhodes and Grahamstown community? Then enrol for this course by completing the application form below and return it to Schalk van der Merwe (S.vandermerwe@ru.ac.za or HR Room 209) or Nomaxabiso Yantolo (n.yantolo@ru.ac.za)
