2 bag system supports recycling

Makana Municipality has announced officially that as of 2 March 2009, their Waste Collection service will also take all recyclable materials from our homes. Residents are requested to place ALL recyclable materials (glass, tins, paper, card, and mixed or pure plastics) into one bag (clear or orange), and the remaining disposable items in a black bag - on their usual garbage collection day.

The new 2-bag system will save residents the trouble of taking different containers to different recycling depots around town. The Municipal vehicle will take the recyclable materials to the Masihlule Project sorters, located at the Grahamstown landfill site. There, a team will sort the materials into the required containers, and receive payment by weight.

The Rhodes University Recycling Task Team will be meeting again on 5 March, where they will also discuss how best the University can support the new municipal 2-bag system. Clearly, the 2-bag system will help support recycling businesses, provide much-needed income for the Masihlule Project and other informal recycling entrepreneurs, as well as helping clean up the town.
