Numerical Modelling

Lecturer: D Pollney

Prerequisites

Numerical Analysis (AM3.1) and Partial Differential Equations (AM3.4)

Description

We will take a practical look at developing techniques for solving evolution-type PDEs. The model equations will be linear and nonlinear waves, and we will deal with issues such as the well-posedness of the numerical formulation, stability, convergence and error estimates, boundary conditions. We will also introduce finite volume and high-resolution schemes for handling the formation of shocks in nonlinear equations.

Textbook

R Leveque "Numerical Methods for Conservation Laws" Cambridge 2008.

Tutorials

One tutorial per week.

Tests/Exams

One test and one final examination.
