  • Research Data Management
Research data management concerns the organisation of data, from its entry to the research cycle through to the dissemination and archiving of valuable results.(from, Whyte, A., Tedds, J. (2011). ‘Making the Case for Research Data Management’. DCC Briefing Papers. Edinburgh: Digital Curation Centre. Available online) Research processes need to incorporate research data management so as to support efficient research, and meet expectations and requirements of the university, research funders, and legislation.

  • Open Access

    • Rhodes University recognises the importance of the global Open Access Movement for the dissemination of knowledge and cultural heritage, and the need to share its research output with the rest of the African continent and the world. As a signatory to the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge, Rhodes University commits itself to:

  • Copyright advice

  • NRF rating

Several South African universities use the outcomes of the NRF evaluation and rating process to position themselves as research-intensive institutions, while others provide incentives for their staff members to acquire and maintain a rating and give special recognition to top-rated researchers. Ratings enable national benchmarking and potential access to funding, while also encouraging researchers to publish high quality outputs in high impact journals/outlets. Rated researchers as supervisors will impart cutting-edge skills to the next generation of researchers.

Researchers and academic staff may contact their Principal Librarian  for help with establishing author metrics and citation counts required for the NRF rating application.
