Michael Maragnxa

It is with great sadness that the Registrar’s Division shares the news of the passing of Lulamile “Michael” Marangxa earlier this week. Michael started at Rhodes University on 17 August 1981.

He was initially employed as Public Relations Assistant in the then Public Relations Division, and later as Recruitment Assistant at the Registrar’s Office.

While still at Public Relations, Mr Marangxa started participating in Orientation Week tours. He did it with so much passion that he soon led the O-Week tours for parents and students. And thus, the first Official Tour Guide for Rhodes University was born.

Come rain or shine, Mr Marangxa’s passion for showing the grounds and buildings to guests never faltered. In 2007, a kind donor, who had noticed Mike’s love for his job, gave him a golf cart to use for showing people around campus. The cart became fondly known as “Skoro-skoro”.

There is much to say about Mr Marangxa by those who he inspired over the years. He received many letters and mentions of thanks during his time at Rhodes University.

A kind soul, Michael was always willing to assist, and made everyone feel welcome. Not only was he a colleague, but he was family. He is remembered for his friendliness and warmth.

He would sit at his desk eating his apples and drinking the soup that he loved so dearly. Colleagues in the Bureau remember how, even after his retirement, he would bring something nice when it was a birthday.

Our condolences to his family and may his soul rest in peace.

Rest well Lulamile “Michael” Marangxa, the Rhodes University community thanks you. You have done us proud.
