Pedro's research focuses on different freshwater fish families occurring in Africa and in the Neotropics, and incorporates up to date practices on integrative taxonomy, phylogenetics and biogeography.

He is particularly interested in approaching long standing taxonomic problematic groups, by using a combination of molecular, external morphology and osteology data. The biogeography research, on the other hand, aims in understanding temporally how the different fish groups evolved.

Pedro completed his PhD at Museu Nacional/UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro) in Brazil in 2018, which included a nine-month period at the Royal Museum for Central Africa (RMCA) in Tervuren, Belgium. His PhD focused on understanding the relationships within the African family Procatopodidae (lampeye fishes), the subject of this presentation.
